The Future of ICT: Girls!!!
The International Girls in ICT Day is set aside to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider studies and careers in the growing field of information and communication technologies. The sector has a pressing need for a wide range of ICT talents: as there is a growing gap between the digital skills needed by employers and the number of jobseekers with the required technical know-how.
However, statistic has shown that out of 7 million people working in the ICT sector; only 30% are women. Also, many Girls are poorly placed to benefit from the knowledge economy as they have less access to skills training and development that would enable them to gain employment in the ICT sector. Consequently, the number of female working in ICT is disproportionately low.
If Girls are encouraged, they can become great programmers, technicians, and ICT professionals. Supporting the education of women and girls in the ICTs is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),in particular SDG 5, which is to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Not only will jobs in the ICT sector lift women out of poverty;it will also enhance a more gender-balanced sector and enable highly talented women to be at the leadership level
Happy International Girls In ICT Day!
